Reckoning with Joppa — Gallery
A story about place: The tight-knit community of Joppa is hemmed in and tucked away in a pocket of south Dallas less than ten miles from downtown. First established as a freedman’s town by emancipated slaves in 1872, the neighborhood has a long history of grappling with abuses and challenges from the city and developers. Habitat for Humanity initiatives have also introduced new families into a community that has mostly ever been made up of the town’s first descendants.
For the past year, I had the tremendous experience of photographing the residents of Joppa celebrating, mourning, and remembering— remembering how Joppa began and wondering where it goes from here.
